Why are some PDFs so big?
Scanned documents and PDFs with photos store every page as a large picture. Re-compressing those pictures at a sensible resolution is where the savings come from, often 70% or more, while the text stays sharp.
Getting under an upload limit
Lower the image DPI to 100 for on-screen reading, or keep 150 if the document may be printed. PDFs that are mostly typed text are already small and won't shrink much.
Questions
Will the text stay searchable?
Yes. Only the images inside the PDF are re-compressed; the text and links are kept as they are.
Is there a page limit?
No page limit. The whole upload can be up to 500 MB.
Can I compress a PDF on my phone?
Yes, pick the PDF from your Files app and press Compress.
