Common PAN card upload errors, and the fix
Photo over 20 KB
PAN card refuses a photo above 20 KB. Phone photos are usually 2–5 MB, so compress it to around 16 KB rather than right at the limit.
Wrong photo size or shape
The PAN card photo should be 2.5 × 3.5 cm (197 × 276 px at 200 DPI). A photo in a different shape gets squashed or refused, so crop it to that shape before shrinking; the tool above does both.
Signature over 10 KB
PAN card refuses a signature above 10 KB. Phone photos are usually 2–5 MB, so compress it to around 8 KB rather than right at the limit.
Wrong signature size or shape
The PAN card signature should be 4.5 × 2 cm (354 × 157 px at 200 DPI). A signature in a different shape gets squashed or refused, so crop it to that shape before shrinking; the tool above does both.
Background isn't plain white
PAN card wants a plain white or light background. A coloured wall, curtain or room behind you can get the photo rejected at verification, weeks later. Turn on White background and it's replaced for you.
Not a real JPG
The PAN card portal takes JPG files. iPhone photos are HEIC and screenshots are PNG, and renaming a file to .jpg doesn't convert it. Drop the original into the tool: it always saves a genuine JPG.

Good to know
Protean's page mentions limits up to 50 KB; other guides give 20 KB for the photo and 10 KB for the signature. These presets meet both.

Tips for PAN card
For a PAN application the photo is 2.5 cm wide and 3.5 cm tall, on a white background, and the signature goes in a wide 4.5 × 2 cm box. Sign in the middle of the paper so it fills that box after cropping.
